As we start the new year with all the good intentions and new year’s resolutions, I thought I would do an episode where I discuss what makes us follow through vs giving up on our intentions.
All our goals and dreams start with a desire, a want.
But that desire on its own is not enough for us to be prepared to stay focused on our goals.
The second element that we need to stay on track is the belief. The belief in ourselves. The belief that we can handle any emotions that will overwhelm us at the first difficulty.
And to create and nurture that belief what we need is to be committed to our goals and ourselves. Have our own back when things get difficult, when people and situations and other options try to distract us from our goal.
Commitment exists when we have a compelling reason, a deep why connected to the goal. So this is where we want to be honest with ourselves and spend time looking inside ourselves and find our reason to want what we want.
Because if that compelling reason is not strong, then there is good chances that we won’t be staying focused on our goals.
You don’t have a strong why? great, then don’t set that goal.
I believe it is worse in the relationship with ourselves, to set a goal and give up, rather than being honest at the get-go and just say “actually, I don’t want that so badly”.
And that is ok.
Sometimes, we are choosing our goals for the wrong reasons and I am here to remind you that you don’t need permission to dream whatever you like. Don’t go after the dreams of others – those are their dreams. Go after yours. I know you have dreams and desires. As human this is how we are wired.
So if you don’t feel like you have anything that you want, just ask yourself where this thought is coming from.
I come from a place of abundance and my dreams are connected to sharing my experience with more people and help them live a fulfilling life. You see… it is not coming from a place of lack or scarcity. It is coming from a happy place of great satisfaction and desire for growth.
So here are the key steps to get to your compelling reason:
- Decide what you want – don’t let confusion take over your mind
- Write your commitment and your why.
- Make a decision to commit.
- edit your commitment and your why until it is compelling for you.
- Ask yourself why you don’t have it yet. What are the competing desires and what has held you back until now.
- Commitment means you have a feeling of certainty. You know you will find obstacles on the way and you commit to handle them and overcome them.
- You don’t give up. You take continuous action until you achieve your result.
Have a great start of this new 2021!
