Ep.#24: Your Brain is a Time Machine

How often does it happen that you are in a conversation and all of a sudden you haven’t heard any of the last 10 words that were said?

You were transported by your brain to a different place, in the future or in the past. And you missed out on what happened right there and then.

Tune in to listen to this weeks episode where I explain the difference between your observing mind and your thinking mind, and how to practice enjoying the current moment with an abundance mindset.

There are three main reasons why you would like to practice to live more in the moment:

  1. This is the only life you have in this body, so see that you do the most out of it! If you are only partially present with yourself at any given time, you are going to miss out on something. And if you are a person that is constantly dissatisfied and not content of your current situation, I would like to offer that it might have to do with you being absent with yourself and the good news is that there is nothing you need to change about yourself and your environment, for you to have a different experience of it. It might just be enough for you to start paying more attention at yourself and be curious about you.
  2. Tolstoy says “There is only one time that is important – NOW! It is the most important time because it is the only time that we have any power.” to be able to live a meaningful live we want to act. And the power of actions only exist in this precise moment. The past has already happened; the future does not yet exist; so we can not act outside this only precise point in time: here an now.
  3. To do does not mean to do no matter what. I am talking about acting in a constructive way that helps us advance in the direction of travelling that is meaningful for us. This is why it is so important to be present with ourselves and our needs and desires. When we know what we want and take the time to process those thoughts, it will become much clearer what we choose to do to answer our needs and desires.

I encourage all of us to be more mindful in the activities we carry out every day. There is beauty all around us and we might be surprised of all the details we miss noticing about ourselves, about others and about our environment.

Here is a simple exercise you can do to practice mindfulness and being in the here and now:

NOTICE THE SOUNDS (30 sec):

  • Concentrate your attention on the sounds you hear.
  • Focus on the sounds you are making yourself – your breathing, your moves, etc….
  • Focus on the sounds that come from the room you are in
  • Focus on the sounds that come from outside
  • Notice what happens.

NOTE: Every time any distraction in the form of thoughts and emotions arise do the following:

  • Allow your thoughts and emotions to come and go
  • When your attention starts drifting away (and it will do!) just take notice of it
  • Say to yourself ‘time-machine’
  • Bring your attention gently again back to the exercise

Add this exercise as part of your morning routine and repeat it for the next 21 days!

Then come back to this page and leave me a comment how it went!

Have an amazing week.

Take care
